Caught between sexism and postfeminism in school (pomerantz, Post-feminism meaning the simultaneous incorporation, revision and depoliticization of many of the central goals of second wave feminism, assumes that feminism is irrelevant because the battle for gender equality has already been won. Girls constructed as having unlimited choice but only on condition that feminism fades away; enables structural oppression in order to convince people that girls can have it all. Two discourses imply this; girl power (equates consumerism and hypersexuality with liberation and freedom), and successful girls (girls are now academically inferior to boys and are beyond the need for educational feminist intervention) Postfeminism offered girls a way to explain the discrepancies in relation to their gender identities, enabled them to feel strong and beyond the need for help which cancelled out victimhood and instead presented choice and autonomy. Contradictory as on one hand postfeminism says that sexism isn"t present anymore, but girls still deal with issues of sexism within institutions.
