The approach health professionals, including health psychologists take in caring for patients is largely shaped by the health system. Unique private and public funding arrangements, administrative structures, government regulations, and delivery modes all influence the interactions between providers and their patients in the health system. A health system consists of: all the people and actions whose primary purpose is to improve health. Stewardship- the responsibility and protection of something worth caring for and preserving. People needing psychological services generally pay through private health insurance or out of pocket because it is not seen as medically necessary hospital and medical care. Health maintenance organizations (hmos)- organizations that provide a range of health services in a single package that usually directs patients to a particular group of medical professionals and facilities. The canadian system also emphasizes illness prevention and more cost-effective treatment. It is led by the provincial government that use regional health authorities (rhas) instead of private hmos.
