Most drugs affect several kinds of receptors. Increased response to drug cues has been traced to facilitated glutamate synapses in nucleus accumbens, at least for coke & nic. Contingency management: therapy which includes rewards for remaining drug-free. Major depressive disorder (mdd): ppl feel sad/helpless most of day every day for weeks. Their nucleus accumbens becomes less responsive to reward. Cognitive problems; low motivation, attention probs, impaired memory, & impaired sense of smell: cognitive limitations often persist even after successful treatment of mood probs. Absence of happiness is a more reliable symptom than increased sadness. ~5-6% of adults in us & canada have a clinically significant depression (i. e. , serious enough to warrant attention) within a given year: more than 10% do at some point in life. More common in women during reproductive era, but about equal before puberty & after menopause.
