Poor attachment during childhood can lead to substance abuse issues later on in life: three issues that may produce separation stress in children: nature, nurture and fate, children of fathers with sud have higher levels of avoidant attachment. Abandonment depression: difficulty in feeling regulation which impairs interpersonal relationships. Six key elements: homicidal rage, suicidal depression, panic, hopelessness, emptiness, guilt. Sufferers also seek out dysfunctional relationships: adopted children: are more at risk for developing substance abuse issues in adolescence. Parent support and control: main goal for parent: high level of support, moderate level of parental control. Boundary inadequacy: ambiguous boundary inadequacy: double messages which create tension, communicator does not send clear messages, overly rigid boundary inadequacy: not overly responsive/ adaptable. Boundary ambiguity: clustering: early denial stage, families make sacrifices to maintain family harmony, conflict: family members experience stress from uncertainty.
