Firsthand experience and common sense is a good starting point for research methods but it"s not an adequate safeguard against confirmation bias and other sources of human error. Prefrontal lobotomy surgical procedure that severs fibres connecting the frontal lobes of the brain from the underlying thalamus. The prefrontal lobotomy procedure was highly subjective as the physicians performing it observe the patients before and after and conclude with their own opinions without any systematic research. They based it on i can see that it works as sufficient evidence for the effectiveness of the treatment. However, when controlled studies were performed they found out that it hosted more problems including extreme apathy and did not specifically target the real problem (schizophrenia). It is now considered a pseudoscience and shows that research design matters. Heuristics mental shortcuts that help us to streamline our thinking and make sense of our world. A cognitive miser doesn"t expend any more effort in thinking than is necessary.
