Chapter 3 causes and special effects: the political environment of film. The red scare and mccarthyism: huac and hollywood. The most obvious event of politics into the world of film was the red scare of the late 1940s. House un-american activities committee questioned industry figures in hopes to expose them as alleged agents of the soviet union. Huac arrested the hollywood ten, filmmakers who refused to talk to congress about their political intentions. This gave politicians to jail powerful hollywood figures. All in all, they never had any evidence of communist propaganda in movies. Civic crusades against the feared effects of film began in 1906, by which time early movie houses called nickelodeons had proliferated throughout urban america. Traditional theater excluded lower class people, so the nickelodeons catered to them.
