PHL 214 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Critical Thinking, Egocentrism, Relativism
Document Summary
We must be aware of what is involved in good critical thinking and what can result from sloppy thinking. We must practise avoiding the pitfalls and using the skills and techniques that critical thinking requires. We must be motivated to do all of this because it is unlikely that we will use critical thinking if we can"t appreciate its value. The most common barriers to critical thinking can be sorted into two main categories: those hindrances that arise because of how we think. These barriers are those that come into play because of psychological factors: those that occur because of what we think. These barriers are those that arise because of certain philosophical ideas we have. Humans spend a great deal of time protecting/maintaining/comforting our own mental life, or our own selves. This does no harm until we push our self-serving efforts too far (when we accept claims for no good reason)
