PHL 110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Derek Parfit
Document Summary
Seems weird to think that anything exists then if nothing once did. There are an infinite number of possible universes. Some believe that if all events were caused by earlier events, everything explains itself. If the universe had no beginning, there would be nothing for a creator to explain. Still would have an eternal universe to explain. Suppose then that the universe is not eternal (due to the big bang) Physicists suggest this event to be a random fluctuation in a vacuum - would explain how the universe came into existence out of nothing. So, there cannot be a causal explanation of why the universe exists. Would not make a difference if there is a god. No causal explanation of why god exists. Assumptions that since these questions cannot have causal answers, they cannot have any answers. Some dismiss these questions then - not worth considering. Others conclude they do not make sense.
