Children : horizontal and shorter eustachian tube compared to adults ( sloped) with this shape, the children can experience a higher risk of pathogens from the nasopharynx to migrate to the middle ear. Otitis media ( middle ear infection) result from obstruction of the eustachian tube or of passage of nasopharyngeal secretions into the middle ear- common illness for child esp high for indigeinous children. , and children with downsyndrom, premature infants and those fed by bottle in supine position tenderness. Push on tragus and move pinna- should be firm and not tender, no pain. Palpate mastoid process no pain shuld be felt external auditory meatus. Note size of the opening , should not find any swelling, redness or discharge may find cerumen inspect with otoscope. Attach largest speculum that will fit comfortably in ear canal and attach to otoscope. Tilt pt head slightly away from you allowing the oblique slope eardrum into better view.
