A collection of techniques that are used to complete activities and tasks (inc. modeling) for every aspect of the project. An abstraction of an important aspect of the real world. Makes it possible to understand a complex concept by focusing only on a relevant part. Each model shows a different aspect of the concept. In information systems, some models are of system components that will be developed. Other models are used to manage the development process. How design ideas are communicated in a team environment. All members of development team communicates using common language. Must be able to describe software"s operation and design. Software engineers have evolved their own notation for describing architecture and behaviour. Uml (unified modelling language) - can be used to model many things besides software. Language that has syntax and semantics (what is right, wrong and limitations of decisions) Doesn"t work well with small projects but works well with complex ones.
