Chapter 10
Material Handling
- Material handling is the function of moving the right material to the right place, at
the right time, in the right amount, in sequence, and in the right position or condition
to minimize production costs.
Material control systems are an integral part of modern material handling systems.
1) Part numbering systems, location systems, inventory control systems,
standardization, lot size, order quantities, safety stocks, labeling, and automatic
identification techniques (bar coding) are only some of the systems required to
keep industrial plats’ aterial ovig.
- Material handling all the materials in the manufacturing environment
1) The art and science involving moving, packaging and storing of things
- Five distinct dimensions of MH: (MQTSC)
1) Movement
1) actual transportation/transfer of materialsconcerned w safety facyor and
efficiency of the move
2) Quantity
2) The type and nature of the MH equiptment and cost per unit
3) Time
3) How quickly it moves t/o the facility affects WIP, lead tie… etc
4) Space
4) Storage space, queuing or staging space of material itself
5) Control
5) Aspects: inventory management, tracking of materials, positive identification
- MH =1/2 of all industrial accidents
- Good MH benefits:
1) Reduces cost of production
2) Improved the quality of work life
3) Reduced the drudgery of work
- All investments should be cost justified
1) Equipment should reduce unit costs
2) Nonpowered equipment = low cost; good investments
Ie. Gravity carts, rollers, chutes
- Safety, quality, labor, power and equipment costs must all be included in the unit cost

Document Summary

Material handling is the function of moving the right material to the right place, at the right time, in the right amount, in sequence, and in the right position or condition to minimize production costs. Material handling all the materials in the manufacturing environment: the art and science involving moving, packaging and storing of things. Good mh benefits: reduces cost of production, improved the quality of work life, reduced the drudgery of work. All investments should be cost justified: equipment should reduce unit costs, nonpowered equipment = low cost; good investments. Safety, quality, labor, power and equipment costs must all be included in the unit cost. 80lb bags stacked 40 per pallet and 50 pallets per box-car. No rail car sliding but railroad spur comes into the plant. 40 boxes/ pallet x 50 pallets/ box-car = 2000 boxes/box-car of 80lb/box. Boxcar in to the yard to the storeroom 300 ft away.
