Sustainability: the capacity of the earth"s natural and human systems to survive, flourish and adapt to change. Earth"s life-support systems: (1) geosphere (crust, core, and mantle), (2) hydrosphere (water), (3) atmosphere (air), and (4) biosphere (living things) Includes energy from the sun, air, water and soil. Environmental science: science that aims at learning about the natural world works, the major understand environmental issues we face and find ways to deal with these environmental issues. Ecology: biological science that focuses on how living things interact with each other"s and with their environment. Ecosystem: one or more groups of organisms interacting among themselves and with the physical environment in a specified place. Science: based on the assumption that events in the natural world follow the law of cause-and- effect. Success of the scientific process depends on 4 factors: (1) curiosity, (2) skepticism, (3) reproducibility and (4) peer review. Critical thinking involves: be skeptical about everything you read or hear, search for evidence.
