Lessen divide between professional mhs providers, more holistic approach. Focus on needs as identified by people who are themselves being served e. g. housing, employment, peer support, wellness, crisis stabilization, food, clothing. Collaborating in self-directed services focused on wellbeing. Preferred help = financial resources, relationships, supportive environments, aka stuff not currently offered. Helpful help: throwing out the textbook, offering care from mutual communication, providing advocacy. Undermining: providers who expect people to be grateful. Unhelpful: dominant model of care eg hospitalization, confinements, issues of consent, medication as the only solution. Frustrated because needed clinical diagnoses to receive services, social support. Lots of disconnect between what people wanted and what they received. Lots of discrimination within the system too.
