Discussions about attractions tend to focus on sexual aspects of attractions: sexual orientation: individual"s tendency to be attracted to men/women. This term is too limited, overemphasizes sex, oversimpli es what an orientation is. There is a push to rename it as affectional orientation: affectional orientation: interaction between affect and cognition such that it produces attraction, erotic desire, and ultimately feelings of love. Before 1869, everyone was assumed to be heterosexual; same-sex and bisexual were not recognized. Homosexuals were blamed a lot for what was wrong with society. Homosexuals were seen as neurotic, lonely, depressed, etc. it was believed that they could not whistle, that they were the cause for losing the vietnam war, they were blamed for wwii. Homosexual developed a negative connotation, people referred to themselves as gay/ lesbian. The change in terminology emphasized that they romantically fall in love with each other.
