Sex and media: how are they interconnected. Media plays a large role in the formation of our identities and norms. What is good and bad is a social construction, a social construction that is created through media. Biological sex refers to being male or female determined by genetics, hormones, and physical traits. Gender refers to the psychological experience of femaleness and maleness: a history of sex and advertising in western culture. Sexuality was highly censored in western culture for many centuries, esp. around. Victorian era (fear of overpopulation and thus depleting resources) Vibrators were first used as medical device. Cured hysteria ( mental illness specific to women where their psychological stresses were converted into physical symptoms, and volatile emotions) by inducing orgasm. Vibrators were exposed to advertisements in early 1900s but disguised as messaging devices to promote health rather than sexual stimulation. 1950s began to show a lot more sexualized advertisements as means of selling anything.
