In the preschool years, peers are important source of companionship and assistance with problems and tasks, and as we get older, peers become a source of emotional support, intimate relationships based on reciprocity and exchange between equals. Friendships: friendship: an intimate reciprocated positive relationship between two people. Interactions between friends are characterized by reciprocities, friends have a mutual regard for each other, and benefit form their social exchanges. The functions of friendships: friends provide emotional support and validation of one"s own thoughts, feelings and worth as well as opportunities for the development of important social and cognitive skills. Effects of friendship on psychological functioning and behaviour over time: having close reciprocated friendships in elementary school has been linked to positive psychological and behavioural outcomes.
