Self-determination theory: intrinsic motivation requires autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Further, why we do something can have important consequences on the maintenance of a behaviour (i. e. , intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation): edward deci & richard ryan. Intrinsic motivation: pressure to behave stems from choice and personal desire. Extrinsic motivation: pressure to behave stems from external punishment and reward. Humanistic tradition: emphasis on responsibility, growth, and actualization. Actualizing tendency: inherent drive to actualize; striving for growth, development, and thriving over mere survival. According to self-determination theory, there are three basic and universal psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Autonomy: freedom of choice and ability to self-regulate: burdened by shoulds and musts. Competence: ability to be effective and to achieve mastery of tasks: opportunity to exercise, expand, and express abilities. Relatedness: having meaningful relationships with close others, giving and receiving care, and feeling connected.
