PSYC 231 Chapter 2: Chapter 2 Reading Summary
Document Summary
Gosling, ko, mannarelli and morris (2002) researched what one"s living environment showed about their personality. These researchers believe that people left behavioural residue in their living environment. Behavioural residue: physical traces left behind by every day actions. These are hints or cues to the personality of the occupants. Specific items may be left out due to carelessness or to convey a certain message. Items may be there because it is meaningful or it reinforce their self-views. People may have a tidy or organized room. All of these express the personalities and leave cues for observers. In the study, 1-6 observers visited rooms of 83 student volunteers living in various homes. Names and photos were covered so the observer would not know the race or gender of the occupant. Observers made ratings on a 7 point scale to descriptions that seemed to apply to occupant: anxious, easily upset, extraverted, enthusiastic, conventional, uncreative, critical, quarrelsome, disorganized, careless.
