Outer ear - gathers sound energy and forces it down the ear canal. The pinna: shell like inner part (concha) funnels sound into meatus, 2 consequence in shape and size of pinna. Ampli er: boosting sound pressure for frequencies between 1500 and 7000 hz. Acoustic lter attenuating the high frequency sound component. Meatus: the opening into the ear canal. Ear canal: the s-shaped tube leading from meatus to tympanic membrane, 0. 6 cm wide and 2. 5 cm long. Air pressure cause membrane to vibrate which is sent to the ossicles: ossicles: three bones of middle ear in air lled chamber that send mechanical signals to the cochlea that generate neural response through moving the uid. Stapes: attached to oval window: the point of entry for sound energy into inner ear (cochlea) Bones maximize transmission of sound from outer to inner ear.
