Document Summary

Factorial design: involves any study with more than one independent variable (independent variable & factor mean the same thing) Could involve dozens but usually 2 or 3. Factorial design described w a numbering system that identifies the # of independent variables & the # of levels of each variable. Each digit in the system represents an independent variable. The numerical value of each digit indicates the # of levels of each independent variable. Ex: 3x4x5 = 3 independent variables w 3, 4, and 5 levels respectively. The total# of conditions to be tested can be identified by looking at all the possible combos of the levels of each iv. Produces a display called a factorial matrix. Conditions of the experiment and levels of iv are interchangeable terms in single- factor designs but not factorial. Levels: refers to the # of levels of any 1 iv (in all experimental designs)
