4 basic research designs can be called single-factor designs. Factor means independent variable here 1 factor (independent variable) designs. 4 designs result from decisions about the independent variable under investigation. The independent variable can be tested either bw or w/i subjects. Single factor studies using only 2 levels not that common. Researchers usually prefer to use more complex designs to produce more elaborate outcomes. Kasser & sheldon: investigated relationship bw insecurity & one"s materialistic leanings. Idea derived from tradition where ppl focus their lives on making money out of desire to overcome feelings of insecurity. Tried to create feeling of insecurity in participants & see if it influenced how they responded to questions about financial & consumer issues. 1 group: morality-salience group: asked to write essay on the feelings & thoughts they had concerning their own death. 2nd group: wrote essay on their thoughts & feelings regarding listening to music.
