Took the word experiment and gave it the definition it has today. Experiment: a systematic research study in which the investigator directly varies some factor, holds all other factors constant, & observes the results of the variation. Independent variables: the factors under control of the experimental/manipulated. The extraneous variables: the variables being held constant. Origins: john stuart mill & the rules of inductive logic: Argued for the creation of the science of psychology. Created a set of methods of agreement, concomitant variation, and difference. The methods of agreement & difference together enable us to conclude w a high degree of confidence that some outcome (y) was caused by some factor (x) The method of agreement: if x is regularly followed by y, then x is sufficient for y to occur and could be the cause of y (if x, then y)
