Document Summary

Dualism: the philosophical belief that reality consists of two distinct entities: mind and matter. consciousness exists because it is a substance, and this substance is separate from, and has different properties than, physical matter. This was famously advocated by the philosopher rene descartes. He concluded that it must depend on a substance distinct from physical matter since it does not have properties that we ascribe to matter. A completely different view is that there is only one kind of substance in the universe, matter and that consciousness is a physical phenomenon. This view is often called materialism but you may encounter it also as physicalism or even monism. This is the view that only one kind of substance exist. Materialism: philosophical belief that reality can be known only though an understanding of the physical world of which the mind is a part. Physicalism: the view that everything that exists is no more extensive than its physical properties.
