Document Summary

Meaning to what extent are the ultimate causes of our behaviours genetic, and to what extent are our behaviours determined by more intimidate or proximate factors. Ultimate: ultimate causes are explanations at the evolutionary level. Proximate: proximate factors are the immediate causes and mechanisms of the behaviour. The terms heritability and inheritability means basically the same thing: the ability to be inherited or passed from generation to generation. Behaviour has been viewed as arising from one of two possible origins: either you were born with it (nativism-from genes, you gained it through experience (empiricism-from the environment) Nativism: the philosophical view that we are born with knowledge already present. Empiricism: the philosophical view that we obtain all knowledge through observable facts and experiences. According to nativism, certain abilities are hard-wired" or innate- they are present at birth and not learned from experience. Empiricist, believe that we are born as blank slates and that all behaviour results from our individual experiences.
