Document Summary
Development can be measured in many ways. We can also consider a wider range of indicators. Many indicators of development correlate positively with one another (but not always) Number of people living below a certain income level (poverty line) or lacking certain opportunities. About 1 billion people worldwide live in absolute poverty. Advantage: maybe gets at the real ends of development rather than the means . Many statistics are measured at national level, but can be disaggregated by groups. Ex. in some countries, women have few rights. Ex. white vs. blacks in apartheid in south africa. Certain states or localities may fare better/worse. Other measures take into account possible costs of growth and change. Loss of traditional culture, e. g. , with economic growth. Ability to maintain standard of living for future generations (climate change, ecosystem) State-led approaches were popular from 1950s to 1970s. Countries sought big push to higher development levels.
