Be able to label the following things on a diagram: Kidneys: the size of a fist; located behind peritoneum. The kidneys are embedded in fat; the superior portion protected by the lower ribs. A large volume of fluid that includes wastes, nutrients, electrolytes and other dissolved substances. Proximal convoluted tubule : most of the water is reabsorbed into the blood in the peritubular capillaries as well as glucose, other nutrients, electrolytes. Sodium absorption possibly linked to cotransport of other molecules. Persistent glycosuria: indication of hyperglycemia associated with diabetes mellitus. Controls the reabsorption of water: alters the permeability of the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct. Aldosterone : from adrenal cortex: controls sodium reabsorption + water exchanges sodium ions for potassium or hydrogen ions in the distal convoluted tubule.
