Robert oppenheimer was a child prodigy: he knew several languages, in addition to his knowledge in theoretical physics. He helped establish uc berkeley as the largest school in the country for graduate and post- doctoral study in theoretical physics. The fbi file on him suggested that he was a supporter of communism. But oppenheimer was still chosen to head the manhattan project in the los alamos laboratory: this was where they produced work in designing the atomic bomb. His loyalty and integrity was called into question: his leftist connections were thought to make him a security risk, he had a security hearing in 1954. It found that he placed himself outside of rules, and showed disregard for security. His last stop was as director of the institute for advanced study.
