Students witnessed a different kind of democracy where the process of selecting priority concerns and the means of addressing them was led by the people most affected by the decisions. Participation in elections at all levels is decreasing across the country. We need less politics and more democracy. Meaningful participation of those most affected by inequality combats it and builds a healthier society. Cotacachi is a city in the foothills of the ecuadorian andes. Sas developed citizen councils on education, health, the environment, democracy and economic development. Open councils involve citizens from all walks of life in identifying key priorities and developing plans to address them. Infant mortality and illiteracy were identified as early priorities and have been all but eliminated. Citizens, regardless of socio-economic status, class, race, gender or age are committed to working together to resolve key issues.
