List the four components of an ecosystem and describe their interactions. Define trophic levels and be able to interpret food chains or webs. Outline the characteristics of the major global nutrient cycles. Discuss the impact human activity has had, and is having, on ecosystems worldwide. 4 components of an ecosystem & the interactions. Ecosystem has 4 components: abiotic environment, primary producers, consumers, decomposers. Components are linked by movement of energy and nutrients. As energy flows from producers to consumers and decomposers in a food web most energy is lost. Productivity of terrestrial ecosystem is limited by warmth & moisture. Availability is key constraint in aquatic ecosystem. Primary producer is autotroph organism that can synthesize its own food from inorganic sources. Primary producers use solar energy to manufacture food via. photosynthesis. In deep-sea hydrothermal vents & iron rich rocks below earth surface primary producers use chemical energy contained in inorganic compounds ie. hydrogen to make food.
