PSYC 3250 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Classical Conditioning, Graph Paper, Cribriform Plate
Document Summary
Both learning and memory are neuroplastic processes that deal with the ability of the brain to change its function in response to an experience. Memory: how these changes are stored and subsequently retrieved. 11. 1 amnesic effects of bilateral medial temporal lobectomy. Memory research is closely tied to information discovered from h. m. H. m"s (cid:373)e(cid:373)or(cid:455) defi(cid:272)its (cid:449)ere i(cid:374)stru(cid:373)e(cid:374)tal i(cid:374) the a(cid:272)hie(cid:448)e(cid:373)e(cid:374)t of the current understanding of the neural basis of memory. His seizures but also his ltm was reduced. He experienced both mild retrograde amnesia (some info gained before the surgery was lost) and severe anterograde amnesia (cannot form new memories). Lobotomy: brain region is disconnected via lesion from the rest of the brain. Retrograde (backward-acting): unable to remember the past. Anterograde (forward-acting): unable to form new memories. While h. m. was unable to form most types of new ltm, his stm was intact: he can hold info for a few minutes until he gets tired and stops rehearsing the information.
