PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Neuroimaging, Hemoglobin, Diffusion Mri
Document Summary
Allowed neuroscientists to see what our brains looked like. Had to wait for the person to die though: could be awhile. Testing the behaviour of patients with damage to certain parts of the brain. Neuropsychologists have learned a lot from this experiment. Patients with localized brain damage often lose some type of function. Loss of function determines what the brain region did before it was damaged: this approach relies in inference. Patients with localized brain damage may have small undetectable abnormalities in other regions. Could be that a pathway carrying information to or from the area are related to the lost function has been damaged. Not a guaranteed way to determine what the parts of the brain do. Damaged brain may undergo reorganization over time so abnormalities in behaviour may not reflect what goes on in an intact brain. Recording electrical brain activity through multiple electrodes attached to the surface of the scalp.
