SOCIOL 2U06 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Liberal Democracy
Document Summary
Family is a legal term that carries particular definitions and entails specific rights and obligations for certain legally designated people. Social conventions and notions of respectability adhere to certain types of sexual relations, some child-rearing and socialization practices and some cohabitation arrangements. This greater diversity in actual practices and in what is socially acceptable has generated considerable confusion. Patriarchal theory assumed that the primary family was the natural condition: dad in charge, mom submissive. The idea of a universal, unchanging patriarchal family form was also undermined by the discovery of a wide range of different social forms in different parts of the world.
