Confession evidence is often viewed as a prosecutor"s most potent weapon and police officer will go to lengths to secure such evidence. North america confession usually has to be backed up by some other form of evidence. Police interrogation a process whereby police interview a suspect for the purpose of gathering evidence and obtaining a confession. In the past, physically coercive tactics often used to extract confessions: presently, physical coercion has been replaced by psychologically based interrogation techniques. E. g. lying about evidence, promising lenient treatment, implying threat to loved ones. Reid model a nine-step model of interrogation used frequently in north america to extract confessions from suspects. Primary objective: secure a confession from the suspect. The nine-step procedure in stage three consists of the following steps: suspect immediately confronted about his or her guilt (i. e. fake evidence, psychological themes developed to allow the suspect to rationalize or excuse the crime. Interrogator interrupts statements of denial by suspect to ensure upper-hand.
