I/ ontological self = mysterious entity that does the observing and describing. Individualistic cultures regard the self as having independent and separate existence while collectivist cultures view it as embedded in a larger social context of obligations and relationships. Different cultures think of people in different ways. But indians still describe with traits (some) so idea of individual traits is not foreign to them. Western self is relatively separate entity while eastern self is more integrated into the social and cultural context. Indv. positive self-regard may be felt less by member of collectivist culture well-being to that of a larger group. Cause of behaviour lies within the person (indv behaves consistently from one situation to the next)
