Document Summary
Involves studying a small number of ps and focusing closely on each individual. A type of quantitative research that involve studying in detail the behavior of each of a small number of ps. Doesn"t mean that only one p is studied: more typical for there to be somewhere between 2-10 ps. Contrasted with group research which involves studying large number of ps and examining behavior in terms of averages, etc. Different from case studies: case studies = detailed description of an individual which includes both qualitative and quantitative analyses, ex: freud"s description of anna o", does not substitute for carefully design group or single-subject research studies. Has been around as long as the field of psych itself. Wundt: late 1800s: studied sensation and consciousness by using single-subject research. Ebbinghuas" research on memory as well, and pavlov"s classical conditioning are also examples.
