Hobbes: misery of the natural condition of man pg. Life in the state of nature is brutish,solitary, nasty and short. Nature made men so equal that their differences are not considerable. All men consider themselves to be of the greatest degree of wisdom. Man refuses to acknowledge that there may exist another as wise as themselves as they see their own wit at hand and other men"s at a distance . There is no greater sign than equal distribution that when every man is contented with his own share. From the equality of ability, arises the equality of hope in the attainment of our ends. If two men desire the same thing which they cannot simultaneously enjoy, they become enemies. Argues that the state of nature is a place where it is too dangerous to respect the moral law, and people cannot be criticized for doing whatever they deem necessary in competition with others for their own preservation.
