LIFESCI 3C03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Nuptial Gift, Anisogamy, Nba Coach Of The Year Award
Document Summary
Mates are not related to one another, but they have 50% shareholding in the same children. Parents are interested in different halves of the same children, but cooperation may lead to higher success. Each partner must exploit the other to try to avoid giving up resources that can be used elsewhere (e. g. finding new mates) In anisogamy, male and female gametes contribute the same number of genes, but differ in their food reserve contribution to the new individual. Male gametes: numerous, small, motile, make no food reserve contribution, disposable. Female gametes: few, large, nutrient-rich, costly. Isogamy: individuals are not distinguishable between two sexes: anyone can mate with anyone, new individuals are formed by the fusion of two isogametes, which contribute equal numbers of genes and nutrients to the new individual. In a regular population of isogametes, there would be natural variation in size, even if only slightly.
