chapter 7 stimulus control: discrimination and
generalization
-3 basic principles of behaviour (reinforcement, extinction, punishment) explain why
behaviours increase and continue to occur or decrease and stop occurring
-Operant behaviour is controlled by consequences, so behaviour analysts analyze the
events that follow the behaviour to understand why it is occurring and manipulate the
consequences to modify it
-Antecedents: stimuli or events that precede an operant response… present when it
occurs or were present immediately before the behaviour
Why antecedents important to understand
-Gives us information on the circumstances in which the behaviour was reinforced and
the circumstances in which the behaviour was not reinforced or was punished
-Effects are situation specific
EXAMPLES OF STIMULUS CONTROL
-asking parents for money, mom usually gives but dad does not, so always goes to
mom now…
Reinforced in one situation so continues to occur (mom) but not reinforced with
dad and stops occurring. Mom presence is an antecedent for behaviour of asking
for money and has stimulus control over the behaviour to ask for $.
-Stimulus Control: A behaviour more likely to occur when a specific antecedent
stimulus was present ex: mom
Behaviour under stimulus control when there is an increased probability that the
behaviour will occur in the presence of a specific antecedent stimulus or a
stimulus from a specific stimulus class
Stimulus class ex: red strawberries.. any red strawberry is part of this
