The primary determinants of whether individuals stay healthy or become ill (narrow definition of health) Determine to an extent to which a person possess the physical, social, and personal resources to identify and achieve personal aspiration, satisfy needs, and cope with the environment (broader definition of health) Social determinants of health are about the quantity and quality of resources that a society makes available to its members. Important factors: the quality and distribution of sdoh among its population. Conditions of childhood, access to income, education and literacy, food, housing and employement, working conditions and health and social services. Must consider political, economic and social forces that shape policy decisions. Living conditions = the primary determinants of health (applies to developed and developing nations)
