Four types of tissues: epithelial: covers body surfaces and lines hollow organs, body cavities, and ducts. Allows interaction of internal and external environment: connective: protects and supports body and organs. Bind organs together, store energy as fat, and help with immunity: muscular: composed of specialized cells for contraction and force generation. Generates heat: nervous tissue: detect changes in conditions inside and outside the body responds with nerve impulses. Bio = life | -opsy = to view. Is the removal of a sample of living tissue for microscopic examination: removed through a needle and a syringe surgically. Preserved and stained or cut for observation. Cell junctions: contact points between the plasma membranes of tissue cells: five types, tight junctions. Consist of weblike strands of transmembrane proteins that fuse the outer surfaces of adjacent plasma membranes. Inhibit passage of substances between cells, and prevent spilling of contents of the organs into blood/tissues: examples: lining of stomach, intestine, bladder, adherens junctions.
