Civilizing technologies and the control of deviance argues against conceptualizing behavioral compulsions as diseases and against therapeutic interventions for such compulsions as "treatments" According to biomedical discourses themselves, its more accurate to describe addiction interventions as civilizing technologies (interventions used to produce better citizen rather than to cure biological diseases) Its unnecessary to focus attention on bodily and biological aspects of behavioral compulsions. Addiction is a hybrid entity - includes cultural, societal etc. , explanations. Legitimacy of addiction medication does not depend upon entirely biological foundation therefore the observation that addictions do not have a physical reality. Cultural analysis of addiction medicine will be strengthened. Because the acknowledgement of the biological component to behavioral compulsions. End of 1980"s, agreed that addictiveness of drugs is not about the drug itself but about the effects on parts of the brain involved in emotions and motivation. Idea that substance addiction should not be separated from other addictions such as gambling or sex.
