Its considered a clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern that occurs in an individual and that is typically associated with either a painful symptom (distress) or impairment in one or more areas of functioning (disability) The dsm definition of mental disorder was born out of the 70s debates over homosexuality. This was because homosexuality was deemed a mental disorder in dsm 2. Spitzer (cid:894)dude that (cid:449)as (cid:272)hair(cid:373)a(cid:374) for dsm 3(cid:895) suggested that ho(cid:373)ose(cid:454)ualit(cid:455) (cid:449)as(cid:374)"t a disorder, but that a diagnosis should be considered for those who experience distress. This insight was politically useful because it gave middle-ground b/t those who thought of it as a disorder and those that did not.
