Minority groups: ethno cultural groups that have not originated in northern and western. Visible minority: people with non-white skin tones/non-european in origin, excludes. Culture: shared languages, beliefs, values, customs and practices. People experience aging differently from different cultures. Cultural practices vary among individuals and between generations. Theoretical perspectives on ethnicity and aging: multiple jeopardy theory. Compound of disadvantages associated with ethnicity, class, gender and age. Ethnic senior will face greater challenges then a majority group senior. Hard to separate between lifelong discrimination or more disadvantage with age: buffering theory. Some groups value seniors and provide meaningful roles for them. Chinese culture shows respect to contributions of seniors: the life course perspective. Life unfolds from birth to death and social, cultural and historical context. Impacts of social institutions, historical events, life events, resources etc. Advantages and disadvantages tend to accumulate over a lifetime.
