In 2d art visual elements are called composition, but a broader term that applies to the entire range of visual arts is design. The word design indicates both the process of organizing visual elements and the product of that process. Composition: the combining of parts or elements to form a whole; the structure, organization or total form of a work of art. Design: the process of arranging visual elements into a finished work. Also means the product of the process, as in, the design of that chair is excellent . The 7 key principals of design: unity and variety, balance, emphasis and subordination, directional forces, contrast, repetition and rhythm, scale and proportion. I saw the figure 5 in gold by charles demuth exhibits all 7 key principles of design. Unity: the appearance of similarity, consistency or oneness.
