Document Summary

Psyc311: reading 1: gross anatomy of the brain: Nervous system: central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), peripheral nervous system (spinal and cranial nerves) Attention, consciousness, emotional experience and sleep are all central neural functions. Brain consists of three basic subdivisions: the cerebral hemispheres, the brain stem, and the cerebellum. The cerebral hemispheres are derived from the telencephalon (forebrain) The brain stem consists of 4 parts: the diencephalon, the mesencephalon, the metencephalon, and the myelencephalon. Diencephalon closely tied to the forebrain. Consists of a highly convoluted gray cortex with underlying white matter. The two hemispheres are partially separated by the longitudinal fissure. Each cerebral hemisphere is subdivided into lobes by various sulci. The major lobes are named for the bones of the skull overlying them. Lobes: frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital, insular, and limbic. However, the insular and limbic aren"t true lo(cid:271)e. Limbic lobe has portions in the frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobes. Most important sulci: lateral sulcus, central sulcus.
