PSYC 215 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Cockroach, Individuation, Deindividuation

37 views8 pages

Document Summary

Group = a collection of individuals who have relations to one another that make them interdependent to some significant degree. Social facilitation = initially a term for enhanced performance in the presence of others, now a broader term for the effect, positive or negative, of the presence of others on performance. Presence of others facilitates performance on simple, well-learned tasks, but hinders performance on difficult tasks: presence of others stimulates arousal > more alert, makes a person more rigid. Makes them inclined to make a dominant response. Dominant response = in a person"s hierarchy of possible responses in any context, the response he or she is most likely to make: easy, well-learned tasks > dominant response = correct response. Difficult tasks > dominance response = incorrect response. Had cockroaches run through 2 types of maze with a light shining through it: simple and complex. Running away from light to a dark space was the cockroaches instinct (dominant response)
