Cells provide mitochondria with nutrients and mitochondria provide cells with atp that they use as their immediate source of energy. They contain their own dna and reproduce independently of the cells in which they reside: endoplasmic reticulum serves as a storage reservoir and as a channel for transporting chemicals through the cytoplasm. Both consist of parallel layers of membrane arranged in pairs. The rough endoplasmic reticulum contains ribosomes which produce proteins.
