Ahmidiyah: controversial sunni sect, seen as blasphemous by mainstream islam. They believe their founder mirza ghulam ahma was a prophet. Mainstream islam sees it as a threat, a sect that damages islam. It"s not within one of the six protected religions, so the government does litle to stop atacks on its followers. Some believe that atacks are a result of democraisaion--targeing them is an easy way to gain support from mainstream muslims in elecions. Indonesia is generally seen as tolerant (even to religions outside of islam), but this sect is the excepion. There is a long history of marginalisaion and targeing of the sect. Menchik uses the term godly naionalism to describe indonesia"s religious orthodoxy and. Truncated pluralism. the state demands a belief in one god, and allows ciizens to follow six orthodox religions. Adherence to this creates an imagined community and once you"re part of this you can paricipate fully in indonesian poliical and social life.
