After the Spanish-American war, Spain sold the
Philippines to the USA

Just two days before the US ratified the treaty of Paris,
American forces and Filipino nationalists started
fighting because they wanted independence instead of
a change in colonial rulers

opportunities in Asia, concern that Filipinos were

island of Luzon and established the independent
Philippine Republic
When it was clear that US forces wanted to
impose American colonial control there was an
all-out war

There were two phases of the war
The first phase was from Feb to Nov 1899 and
was dominated by Aguinaldo's attempts to fight
a conventional war against better trained and
equipped American troops
The second phase started in Nov 1899 and lasted
until 1902 which was guerrilla-style warfare

President Roosevelt declared the conflict over in 1902
although there were still minor uprisings in years that
followed

The US had a military advantage with trained forces, a
supply of military equipment and control over the
waterways
The Filipinos were not able to gain any outside
support and there were many weapon shortages

The war was bad from both sides, Filipinos captures
and tortured soldiers and citizens that cooperated with
Americans
Many civilians died as a result of the fighting,
cholera and malaria and food shortages

The colonial government that the US established
launched a pacification campaign that was called the
policy of attraction
It was designed to win over elites and other
Filipinos who did not like Aguinaldo's plans for
the Philippines
This policy allowed for a significant degree
of self-government, introduction of social
reforms and plans for economic
development

people helped the US military effort to win
the war
