EDSL 305 Chapter Notes - Chapter Chapter 6 : Audio-Lingual Method, Behaviorism, Stephen Krashen
Document Summary
Proposal #1: get it right from the beginning. 1. grammar translation: students presented with vocabulary lists with translation equivalents & grammar rules, audiolingual instruction. Even though the emphasis is on oral language, students rarely use the language spontaneously- teachers don"t let beginners speak freely because they fear that they will make errors which could become bad habits. Repetition, practice & memorization of decontextualized sentence patterns. Main argument: learning acquisition takes place when learners are exposed to comprehensible input through listening and/or reading [ krashen] Active listening and reading are, indeed, valuable for language learning. But, many researchers argue that, on its own, comprehensible input is not enough. Perhaps comprehension-based activities are a good way to begin learning or supplement other types of learning. Comprehension-based approaches are most successful when they include guided attention to language features as a component of instruction (see van patten, 2004)
